Friday means new music, and now that we’re officially into the fourth quarter of 2017, the new releases are coming at us really, really fast. There are close to fifty new releases available today. Among those are these five picks. (For longer lists of today’s new releases go here and here.)
1. Wolf Parade, Cry Cry Cry
They’ve been AWOL since about 2011, so the return of this Montreal band is most welcome. From what I’ve heard already, it features some pretty fine power pop. The UK seems to like it, too.
2. Weaves, Wide Open
Toronto’s Weaves is getting some serious love overseas with this album. When I was in the UK last week, several of the papers carried stories on the group.
3. The Darkness, Pinewood Smile
I don’t care what anyone says, I like The Darkness. A lot. Their last album, 2015’s Last of Our Kind, should have been huge with rock fans (check out the song “Open Fire” for today’s dose of rawk.) Maybe this time.
4. Marilyn Manson, Heaven Upside Down
Too bad about that stage prop thing last week. Manson’s injury will keep him off the road for another ten days or so. Still, it’s good to have him back. A crazy world requires crazy music.
5. Liam Gallagher, As You Were
How long have we been talking about this record? Our Kid finally gets his solo record out, about a month or so before his brother drops his next project. The next 60 days could bring us the Battle of Gallaghers–or so the hype machine would have us believe.
