In the letter to Red from Andy… Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.
Jodie Snavely, of the Mansfield and Richland County Convention and Visitors Bureau in Ohio, says high winds last year apparently downed the tree, which had split during a storm in 2011. The bureau was informed in July 2016 about the downed tree.

Wood from the tree used in an iconic scene from the movie has been fashioned into some very cool – but expensive – souvenirs. ‘Shawshank’ merchandise went on sale last Saturday in Mansfield, Ohio. Items from the fallen tree include key chains and magnets ($40), mini rock hammers ($85), bottle openers ($130), and shadow boxes with an inscription of Andy’s note to Red ($500). The giant oak was cut up in April following severe storm,
damage. (Like Andy told Red, “no good thing ever dies.”)
