Hey It’s Dean Hill.
I am a proud North Shore guy and when I get a chance to highlight some cool stuff on the shore I grab it. This time a couple of great North Shore distilleries.
I only made it to two of them before I needed a nap mind you…… Leave a comment at the bottom of a distillery where I should conduct some more “research” next!
They craft a couple of vodkas, one a well spirit for bars around town the other is a coconut carbon filtered creation with hints of vanilla and light coconut. I love their Mediterranean style gin. Juniper light it is steeped in botanicals like olives and rosemary and other Mediterranean herbs. It features tones of coriander and cardamon. Delicious! Head distiller at Deep Cove Distillers is Lucas Westhaven and you can sample his work at 2270 Dollarton Highway.
James Lester is chief distiller. These guys produce a product called Vodka Vodka Vodka. No potatoes it is 75% wheat and 25% barley and is fermented with champagne yeast. Very smooth. Also a Vodka called Thai Dragon that is steeped in chilis and if you like spicy this is for you. Their Amaretto is excellent. An apricot almond liqueur with vanilla demererra and blackberry honey it is great with bourbon. Sons Of Vancouver is at 1431 Crown Street in North Vancouver.
A friend of mine, Don is incredibly knowledgeable about gin. He personally has collected 73 different gins and is always hunting for more. He looks for the contemporary gins. These are spirits getting away from the London Dry gin or your Daddy’s gin.
A few of his favourites:
- Ungava from Quebec the taste evokes Tundra
- Wallflower made on Powell st. local ingredients including juniper. Evokes BC
- Stump from BC. A piney experience
- Beefeater 24- very citrus forward
- Longtable – made in Vancouver. In the style of Hendrik’s gin
For a real classic gin experience. Don says “gin the way it is supposed to be” try Broker’s. It’s a London dry gin as good as any but a real bargain price.
