“Dare to be different” is a new music documentary screening at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC this weekend. DTBD features some of the biggest artists to emerge in the 1980’s, thanks in part to FM radio station WLIR in Long Island. Brewing in the early 80’s throughout the UK, Europe and North America were bands like U2, Duran Duran and Billy Idol.
The tipping point for these and many other emerging groups came by way of an innovative band of radio programmers at WLIR FM. “Dare to be different” tells the story of how WLIR waded through a mine field of push back from the FCC, record companies and conventional corporate broadcasting mentality. Stories from Billy Idol, The Alarm’s lead singer Mike Peters and WLIR staff help shape the vision of what was about to roll over music fans and the industry in North America and the rest of the world.
