Hey it’s Scott Alan,
Sesame Street is set to introduce Julia, a new Muppet who has autism. The creators wanted to find a way to talk about autism and educate their viewers. Writer Christine Ferraro told CBS’ 60 Minutes: “It’s tricky because autism is not one thing, because it is different for every single person who has autism. There is an expression that goes, ‘If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.'” The writers and staff see Julia as more than just a new character, but a project that can humanize an often misunderstood disorder. Julia will appear on two episodes of Sesame Street’s current season and her screen time will increase in future seasons.
