My beautiful friend Kate has made the very tough decision to step away from the business world, and her company Dog & Crow. This is a company whose products were handmade locally in Vancouver, and part proceeds were donated to the SPCA. Read the story behind Dog & Crow…
THE DOG & CROW STORY
Encapsulating bohemian simplicity and effortless beauty, DOG & CROW brings design, function, and philanthropy into the homes of dog lovers and their furry friends.
Founded and conceptualized by fashion and interior design veteran Kate Horsman, the stylish line of pet goods and accessories integrate flawlessly with a contemporary décor aesthetic. The one-of-a-kind pieces, handmade in Vancouver, are inspired by Kate’s affinity for nature, art, and all things beautiful. Beading, fur, leather, and tie-dye are incorporated into beds, leashes, and clothing to express both dog and owner personalities – a whirl of whimsical mixed with the foundations of function.
The story of DOG & CROW is born out of the love of an animal. Sarge, a handsome and stoic Rottweiler rescued by Kate six years ago, was enamoured by crows. He would patiently sit and observe the night-coloured visitors when they entered his domain – curious of the birds or perhaps gauging how best to say hello. On the solemn day when Sarge passed away in 2012, Kate was met by a crow as she left the vet. A symbol of Sarge’s life. The next afternoon, during a hike to clear her head, a crow leapt and soared from branch to branch to branch, following and watching over her as she grieved her best friend. It was another sign she couldn’t ignore. Sarge became the crow, and his spirit now lives in the weavings of each DOG & CROW product.
Rescuing her first dog as a girl of five years old, Kate has devoted her life to animal philanthropy, and the heart of DOG & CROW will lie in community consciousness by donating a portion of proceeds to the SPCA – giving back to the beautiful creatures that open hearts and enrich lives.
Kate has truly devoted her life to animal philanthropy, so much so, that she’s looking for a worthy Dog Rescue Group who could use what she has left for stock, and it would surely help ANY group. She has about $10,000 worth of product that she’s looking to donate. So if you know of a rescue organization that does amazing work and would benefit from this donation, head to her Facebook page and tell her who you think should receive this incredible gift. https://www.facebook.com/thedogandcrow/?fref=ts
Here’s the post from her Dog & Crow page with all the information…
It’s been so long my friends. It’s with appreciation, strength, and compassion that I am announcing the closing of Dog & Crow. Although in a lot of ways, owning my own company has been one of the most gratifying experiences it has also brought on its fair share of challenges and a challenging year on many levels. Some of these challenges I either met, or have decided are not worth my engagement. I have seen great accolades that I never dreamed of having!!! From international publications to local stories. From retailers big and small. That being said I am not a “business woman” and I do not find this area rewarding nor easy. I chose to create a locally run and manufactured company. That in and of itself poses certain challenges and in order for the company to grow decisions would have to be made around this. Unfortunately there have been numerous companies that have shown keen interest in my designs and therefore have taken creative license and made copy, although disappointing I will take genuine compliment in it and rest fine knowing that. I have seen the way a community supports a local brand and also how my amazing American customers embraced me!! Most importantly and regardless of so many things, I started this company for two reasons, to help animals and create beautiful things!! And that is the way I intend to close it as well. If I can do that I will feel very successful and fulfilled as a company. Over the next two weeks I am asking you all to tell me why your favourite dog rescue group deserves my donation of over 10,000$ worth of Dog & Crow stock (leashes collars bowls beds etc)The charity(s) will be free to do with this gift what they would like. At this point I will open this to any charity in North America as long as shipping can be provided. I cannot say enough how much I adore and appreciate every single one of my customers. There have been so many highlights and you must know that I never thought I would even get to the point where I would have a decision to make for the company. I believe in my next chapter as I evolve in myself and that it will be better then the last. There have been so many reasons why this has come to be but it really doesn’t matter because at the end of the day it’s always been about the animals. It is always in my spirit to give and support and so I have no doubt that my next step will be with similar vein. It’s how I choose to be. Comment, post, share, Facebook, email firstname.lastname@example.org however you’d like to share your rescue and I’ll keep you posted on who the company is.
Paying it forward is a beautiful thing.. I couldn’t be more proud to call Kate my friend.
