A video of a homeless man playing the piano in Florida, has gone viral, and since, the power of social media has helped him turn his life around.
One afternoon Donald Gould sat down at an outdoor community piano in downtown Sarasota, Florida and what flowed from his fingers was truly beautiful. Gould has become an overnight viral sensation, as more than two million people have viewed a video of him playing the piano. His version of Styx’s, “Come Sail Away” is absolutely stunning.
The video was shot by “Sly Dylan” and uploaded to YouTube on June 30th, and instantly it went viral and so has his story. Gould is a former Marine and is just a few classes short of a music degree in music theory. When his wife passed away, Gould struggled with addiction as a result and found himself living on the street. With an 18-year-old son living in another state, Gould was struggling to live each day on the street alone. But now, with the help of the viral video, Gould has been given a second chance.
Gould’s friend Jacqueline Bevan started a Go Fund Me account because the outpouring of support and requests to help. With the help of a lawyer, Gould will receive all funds raised, and within eight days more than $40,000 has been donated by people touched by his music and story. In a matter of one week three wonderful things have now happened to the homeless man. Gould reconnected with his son, he has been entered into a rehab facility, and Spring Arbor University has offered to enroll him at the school for free so he can finish his music degree.
The power of social media has once again helped someone truly in need get a second chance at life. Once Gould is finished at the rehab centre, he hopes to use the funds raised to purchase a car, find a place to live, and get a job, hopefully working in music.
